She starts with the parent
Most first calls come from a son or daughter, after a fall or a new diagnosis. Hedda asks to meet the parent too, partly alone, to learn what they want and whether they can still sign.
If they can, she drafts powers of attorney and a health care directive and signs them at home, in hospital or in a care home. If they can’t, she explains guardianship, files the petition and goes to the hearing with the family.
When care begins, she writes the spending plan and files the Medicaid application. She meets German-speaking clients in German.
